How do I get a new category added to your driver's license?

If you have obtained a new category of driving license, you must apply as soon as possible for a new license that incorporates this new category.

The application for a new license is being made online on the websiteANTS: titleContent :

Apply online for a driving license following the passing of an exam

Prepare the following documents in a photographic or scanned version:

  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of domicile
  • 1 digital photo-signature. If you do not have access to a photo and digital signature service, you are invited to fill in and mail a photo-signature form (FPS) during the teleprocedure.
  • Current driving license
  • If you are under 21 years of age and have only AM permit, copy of theASSR: titleContent of 2nd level orASR: titleContent, or failing this (e.g. in case of loss) declaration of honor
  • If necessary, medical advice (form cerfa no. 14880)
  • If necessary, a diploma or certificate or professional title certifying completion of a driver's training by road
  • If necessary, an undertaking on the honor to follow the initial qualification named Fimo: titleContent within 1 year, or FIMO certification (addition of categories D and FROM by a candidate under the age of 24)
  • Documents related to Defense and Citizenship Day (JDC) if you are French, aged from 17 years to 25 years not yet completed (unless you have already provided them at the time of registration for the examination of the license): individual certificate of participation (CIP) in the JDC, or individual certificate of exemption, or certificate of administrative situation issued in case of deterioration, loss or theft, or provisional certificate of situation, including postponement, vis-à-vis the national service.
  • If you are a foreigner, proof of regularity of the stay or, if you are exempt from a residence permit, proof of your presence in France for at least 6 months (payroll, rent receipt...).

Reminder

The Driver's License Examination Certificate (CRC) which you downloaded after passing the practical test of the license test allows to drive the new category of vehicle during 4 months in France. In addition, as soon as you receive the email or SMS informing you that the permit application has been validated, you can download a Secure Driving Rights Certificate (SDA), valid for 4 months from the date of issue.
